Falling in Love with the Cross

Ven. Fr. Felix Rougier, M.Sp.S and the Cross

” Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations. You are my witnesses of these things. And, behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you, but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high” (Lk 24:46-49). Ven. Father Felix Rougier, M.Sp.S knew that the “dynamics of the Pentecost event” can be active in our day, if we, like the Apostles, turn for inspiration to the Holy Spirit and go to the Cross.

In a summary of Father Rougier’s work, Father Rafael Ledesma, M.Sp.S, encourages us “to be free and ready to collaborate with the sanctifying action of the Holy Spirit so we may be transformed into Christ.” We do this by “falling in love with the Cross and doing all in our power to extend the reign of the Holy Spirit” (Constitutions of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit).

How do we extend the reign of the Holy Spirit? We find him active and loving us in the rigors and joys of our lives. So often, we’ve seen a sugar coated devotion to the Holy Spirit, of hands raised in praise, of feel good sentiments. This is not a convincing witness to the World, for the World is beautiful but off balance today. Turn on the news, read the news paper, catch your live feed. We have to find the power of the Holy Spirit applicable for our times. We do that by finding the light of the Holy Spirit in the shadow of the Cross, of our crosses that come in everyday. You lose your job and see the Holy Spirit inspire generosity in others to provide for you. You sit alone in a restaurant after your divorce and find that you’re not alone. God is loving you where you need it the most. You find simple joy in the ordinary places of life. In January, you open your front door and hear a bird singing. Be a witness to the practical power of the Cross, the Holy Spirit, as he connects to your life. Father Felix helps us fall in love with the Cross and the Holy Spirit, so our lives speak volumes to a hungry World around us. Let us receive this promise of Our Father. Let us wait with our socks and shoes on until we’re “clothed with power from on high.” All this will allow us to be “free and ready to collaborate with the sanctifying action of the Holy Spirit as we, ourselves, are transformed into Christ.” ~ Mary
